Processes of Concentration of Industry in the Suburban Area Based on the Example of Lower Silesia

Rising costs of the functioning of cities, scientific and technological progress, the increasing level of education of the population, and numerous ecological barriers cause the decentralization of economic activity in the post-industrial era. One of the consequences of this phenomenon is the growing attractiveness of the suburban area in terms of location. The aim of the study is to show the spatial differentiation and to assess the level of development of modern processes of concentration of industrial activity in the suburban areas around major cities in the Lower Silesia region. The scope of issues analysed depended on the availability of data, particularly on the local level.The article presents analyses on the enterprises in industry, industrial areas, employment, and sold production of industry. The issue of suburbanization was analysed on the basis of the balance of internal migration, the intensity of completed flats, as well as the number of residents from the cities in the area of suburban cities studied. Location quotient (LQ) and taxonomic linear ordering method distance from the pattern were used to recognise the degree of development and the level of spatial differentiation of the process of concentration of industrial. Parameters mentioned above have been presented for municipalities and poviats of the Lower Silesia region which made it possible to show their spatial differentiation and intensity.
