Abstract

The purpose of this article is to assess the development potential of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship in relation to other regions of the country (divided into five categories of potential: demographic and social, natural and cultural, economic, spatial and institutional) indicating the main determinants and barriers of development and the identification of the key sectors of the economy of the region. The basic research question is: Which sectors of the economy in Subcarpathian Region may contribute to its competitive advantage over other regions in the country? During the study a broad range of social (including in-depth interviews and focus group interviews with entrepreneurships, representatives of local government and non-governmental organizations) and statistical methods were used, which allowed to accumulate a vast collection of empirical materials. Based on the research, it was found that the economic and socio-demographic potential plays the key role in the region.

Jerzy Bański, IGiPZ PAN, Warszawa

Prof. Jerzy Bański, Ph.D., is Head of the Department of Rural Geography and Local Development, Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization PAS. He also holds lot of functions in national and international organizations – for the last six years he has been Chairman of the Main Board of the Polish Geographical Society. Led more than 40 scientific and applied projects. He is the author or co-author of about 270 scientific publications in national and international publications.

Konrad Ł. Czapiewski, IGiPZ PAN, Warszawa

Konrad Czapiewski, Ph.D., works as a senior researcher in the Department of Rural Geography and Local Development, Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization PAS. At the same time he is a Treasurer of the Main Board of the Polish Geographical Society. He actively participates in numerous national and international research and applied projects. He is the author or co-author of over 80 scientific publications, including several monographs.

Marcin Mazur, IGiPZ PAN, Warszawa

Marcin Mazur, MSc. is a researcher in the Department of Rural Geography and Local Development, Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization PAS. He is also a member of the Main Board of the Polish Geographical Society. Cartographer by education. He has actively participated in a number of research and applied projects.
