The research is focused on definition, measure, causes and consequences of indebtedness. The novelisation of the consumer bankruptcy legislation in 2015 created broader access to the consumer bankruptcy. The text is an attempt to answer to the following questions:</p> <p>-When does excessive debt occur?</p> <p>-What are the reasons for and the consequences of excessive debt?</p> <p>-How does the law novelisation change the relation between the consumer and banks?</p> <p>-What kind of tools should be undertaken to reduce the risk of the excessive debt of consumers? The paper is based on existing data and current literature and legislation. The findings included in the article indicate the impact of legislation changes on the possibilities of improvement of consumer situation and consequences for consumer protection system.
